The Choo-Choo Grill

The Choo-Choo Grill is located at the corner of Leonard and Plainfield in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was once a station for the railroad and it was converted into a diner years ago. Some years ago, I was driving by and there was a sign out front that read "Best soup in the Galaxy". How many chances are going to have to partake of the best soup in the galaxy? So, I wheeled in, and ordered some potato soup. And you know what? It was the best soup in the galaxy. A thick creamy soup and a huge handful of freshly fried bacon tossed on top. I was in Heaven. I have been back many times, and let me tell you the Choo-Choo will throw a cheeseburger and bowl of chili in front of you that you will tell your grandkids about.

THE GOOD: The Choo-Choo Grill has a down-home 'Mom and Pop' atmosphere that is charming and sadly disappearing from American life. The food is very good. It is prepared right in front of you if your at the counter, and most patrons are. The staff are friendly.

THE BAD: Extremely limited seating. The place maxes out at 12. Yeah, you read that right, 12. The parking is crowded. The prices are slightly too high; apparently we all have to pay too much to compensate for the limited seating business model. The Choo-Choo is open only in the daytime. This is definitely a breakfast/lunch place only. But choose lunch. Breakfast is not their forte.

OVERALL: Worth the seating wait if you're in the area during lunch time.
